A Brief History of Oxford (MS) Alumni Chapter

The very history of Oxford Alumni chapter reaches back to 1987 when the Holly Springs (MS) Alumni Chapter was chartered. We are nick named the H.O.T. Chapter due to the fact that we serve three different areas in Mississippi. Those areas are Holly Springs, MS, Oxford, MS, and Tupelo, MS. Each at one time had functioning chapters are now comprised into one. Brothers all live in such close proximity that we believe that we will be more efficient working together as one.

In the summer of 2007, Deborah A. Purnell who was the president of the Upsilon Iota Omega Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Billy Brown, Past Polemarch of Germantown Alumni discussed having a forum to help the young black men in the Oxford community. They decided that the event would be called the “Black Male Forum”. Ms. Purnell took on the task of managing the facilities and Billy Brown would manage the speakers for the event. Ms. Purnell was so impressed with Grand Polemarch Dwayne M. Murray Esq. at their Boule in Detroit, that she wanted a strong Kappa presence at the forum. This gave Billy Brown the opportunity to invite Kappa men like Marquis McClould, Derek Horne, Keith Barnes, Wallace Townsend, Darnell Scott, Randy Ball and others to be a part of the Black Male Forum. The Brothers presented information to the young men that attended. The way the information was conveyed was so heart felt and powerful. That it reminded each brother of its oath as members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. After the forum was adjourned brother spent the next three hours in the parking lot of Second Baptist Church recommitting to that good Old Kappa Spirit. From that conversation, the planning for the H.O.T. chapter was born.

We hold our heads high to say that we are members of the HOT Chapter. We are the past host of the 68 th South Central Province held in Tupelo, MS. Brothers from all over came to enjoy a weekend of business and pleasure. We thank you for all your support as we are a growing chapter.
